The Genre That Refuses to Die!

Horror will always be a controversial genre, endlessly linked in to moral panics, largely because it is so consistently popular with a teen audience. Psycho and Peeping Tom caused outrage in 1960, ruining the career of Michael Powell; Child's Play 3 was (inaccurately) linked to the Bulger killings, re-fuelling the 'video nasties' debate; the Saw franchise has created many headlines and been dubbed 'torture porn'.
And yet ... many years on, the likes of Psycho and Halloween, not to mention Hammer's Dracula are hailed as classics, and the genre remains box office gold, the reboot of Nightmare on Elm Street hitting no.1 in May 2010 solid proof of its enduring appeal.
I've tried to avoid embedding any particuarly gory examples of the genre, but please note that some of the links may direct you to sites featuring some gore, and some may contain adult advertising, so please use this blog responsibly!

The Guardian's Phelim O'Neill offers this summary of the genre: 'There are two things horror has taught us. Firstly, there will always be new horror films. Secondly, most of them will be rubbish. Thankfully, enough will take a chance or try a few different moves to keep the genre in rude health.'
